Microsoft, Apple Join to Fix Vista iPod Issues

Touting the collaboration between the two companies, Microsoft today released a patch it developed with Apple to correct problems Windows Vista users are having with iPods. While Apple already updated iTunes, issues remained with iPods becoming corrupted when ejected.

"The long and short of it is this: Apple and Windows have partnered together to ensure a great experience in using Windows Vista with iTunes and the iPod, and both companies recommend you download this update," said Vista product manager Nick White. The download is available now, and will be automatically downloaded for Vista users beginning May 22.

Sun Partners with Ericsson on Java Platform

Sun is pertnering with Ericsson to support development of Java-based server applications runing on wireless networks.

Sun Microsystems Inc. is collaborating with Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson to support development of Java-based server applications that can run on wireless networks. The announcement was made at the JavaOne 2007 conference Tuesday in San Francisco.

Sun and Ericsson will contribute to the GlassFish open-source community, a group devoted to developing server applications based on the Java Enterprise Edition platform, which Sun open sourced a year ago, said Rich Green, Sun's senior vice president for software. GlassFish is primarily focused on enterprise-level applications but the collaboration with Ericsson will allow it to expand into applications delivered on mobile networks.

Specifically, said Green, the agreement will make available to GlassFish the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) portion of the IMS (IP multimedia subsystems) protocol to deliver Java applications over wireless networks.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will contribute parts of its server development to GlassFish, including a variety of tools and expertise to support developer communities. Ericsson may also allow developers to test their applications on a live IMS-based network.

Like other companies at JavaOne, Ericsson sees that wireless devices are more ubiquitous than desktop PCs and mobile is where the company's energy should be directed.

"We realize that in developing new services around IMS that will change the way people live their lives, we can't do that on our own," said Martin Harriman, vice president of marketing and business development for the multimedia business at Ericsson. "This is a big step for us [and] we've never worked like this before."

Green also emphasized the significance of a company like Ericsson with deep roots in the traditional telecommunications market embracing the open source concept.

"For them to say the leading edge technology that is going to power their next big round of business is going to be in open source is this huge quantum leap for a company like that," Green said.

Ericsson and Sun have the same motivation to support the open source community, Green said. If open source developers create novel applications that encourage people to buy mobile devices, that will spur demand for more of the network equipment Ericsson makes and more of the servers Sun makes.

Sandboxie is a lot like previously mentioned Altiris SVS, but since I've started using Sandboxie I've become somewhat of a convert to its no-nonsense operation. One really great feature of Sandboxie is the quick sandboxing of your browser, which - aside from giving you a completely safe browsing session - lets you run a second instance of Firefox. That means you can run two profiles at the same time (something I do on a semi-regular basis). Both Sandboxie and Altiris SVS are great choices for testing out apps before you completely install and for browsing the internet with nearly complete safety, so if you haven't tried out virtualization as a testing bed, I'd recommend giving one of these a try. — Adam Pash

Dell condemns laser printer power waste

Personal printers are grossly inefficient compared with network printers - burning extra power which dwarfs the toner bill and bloats companies' carbon footprint, according to Dell.

The company claims personal laser printers cost €85 per year in power costs alone, compared with €5 per user each year for a networked printer. Users continue to provide them because they are simply unaware of the costs involved, says Dell's research.

Seventy-nine percent of IT managers simply don't know the cost of running their printers, according to a Dell survey of small-to-medium businesses in the UK, France and Germany. Ninety percent of managers don't restrict printing in any way, and more than half of them (58 percent) don't even know how many printers they have in their organisation.

"There are thousands of personal printers out there, because IT staff feel people need them," said Stephen Burt, Dell's European imaging business manager. Around 40 percent of these in business are personal laser printers, he said which are power-hogs: "The power costs are much greater than the toner costs."

Laser printers are inefficient when they are lightly used, because the drum mechanism is kept hot for half an hour after each use, in case of further printing, he said. A group of thirty users with personal mono printers will use 17,000 kWh of power per year, costing €85 per user, he said - figures which assume three hours printing each day, and the power consumption of a comparatively efficient modern laser such as they Dell 1110.

A single networked printer could replace all thirty personal printers and print the same number of pages for only 1,000 kWh per year, which works out at €5 in power costs. Consumables would also cost less for the networked printer.

Centralised printing could also manage the arrival of colour lasers, which are now becoming cheap enough to use across the organization, said Burt. Networked printers are more likely to have controls that can ration colour printing to certain users, so it is used where it will be effective.

Currently at number eight in printer market share in Europe (and number six in colour lasers) Dell hopes economy and efficiency measures will move it up the league table. Higher placed manufacturers such as HP are often felt to be focusing on selling more ink and toner.

Comparing efficiency of colour printers could become easier with the arrival of new ISO standards to compare printer yields, including ISO 24712, a set of colour test pages. "You can now compare colour printer yields between vendors," he said. Till now, printer makers have been free to define their own test pages, allowing them to achieve unrealistically high yields.

Lexmark's recent inclusion of Wi-Fi as standard in lower-end printers, is misplaced in devices which are rarely mobile, said Burt: "Ninety-eight percent of people don't use Wi-Fi," he said, asking why the majority should pay for a feature which can add an extra £50 to the price of a printer. Dell offers Wi-Fi with optional USB dongles. "When 98 percent of people want it, it will be a standard."

DRAM Prices Drop

Users may find bargains this spring, as a glut keeps prices below $2 on a downward spiral.

Users looking to add more DRAM (dynamic RAM) to their PCs are likely to continue to see bargains throughout May and June, as prices of the memory chips continue to crash.

The contract price of the most widely used DRAM chips, 512M bit, 667MHz DDR2 (double data rate, second generation), slid below US$2 for the first time in the first half of May. The chips dropped 8.8 percent from mid-April to $1.94 per chip, according to DRAMeXchange Technology Inc., a Taiwanese company that runs an online DRAM market.

It's great news for users. Falling DRAM rates can help offset recent increases in prices for LCD (liquid crystal display) panels, and keep PC prices in check. Users wanting to boost their system speed can also add more DRAM at a low cost. These prices aren't likely to last longer than the next few months. At $1.94 each, the chips are well below the $2.50-$3.00 cost of production for chip makers, and they'll likely shift their production strategies in order to reverse the decline. The second half of the year is also the strongest for PC sales, another factor that could stop the current downtrend.

DRAMeXchange said the DRAM market appears to be weaker than expected in May and June, and many companies in the supply chain, including module makers and PC vendors, have already built up inventories. Prices won't rebound until these inventories are worked down.

The fall below $2 was also significant because of its relative ease, noted Gartner Inc. There was less resistance at that psychologically important level than expected, the industry researcher said.

Even though chip makers are producing DRAM at a loss, prices may not rebound quickly. The companies have to continue selling the chips to bring in cash so they can pay for their expensive DRAM factories. They could try shifting some production to other products, such as NAND flash memory and image sensors, where prices are firmer, but it takes months to tweak production lines for such a change. They could miss an uptick in the DRAM market.

Around three-fourths of all DRAM chips are bought and sold by contracts between DRAM makers and major PC vendors such as Dell Inc. Prices are renegotiated twice per month. The remaining one-fourth is sold on open spot markets, like commodities such as oil and gold.

Contract prices of the chips have fallen 67 percent since the start of the year, when they were fetching $5.95 each. Although many analysts watch DRAM prices as an indication PC shipments might be slowing down, that's not likely the case this time. DRAMeXchange says the decline was caused by chip makers switching some production lines to DRAM from NAND flash memory, which had seen prices fall for nearly six months before recently stabilizing. The changeover has caused an oversupply in DRAM, while the glut in NAND flash memory has eased. There does not appear to be any problem with the PC market, analysts said.

Java Goes Open Source

Sun says the bulk of core Java technology is now converted to open source under GNU.

Sun Microsystems Inc. announced Tuesday it has finished the process of making the bulk of its core Java technology available as open-source software under the GNU general public license version 2 (GPLv2). The vendor made the announcement at its JavaOne conference in San Francisco.

However, Sun hopes the open-source community will help it resolve the issue of Java source code that remains "encumbered," where Sun doesn't hold enough rights to release the code under GPLv2, according to Rich Sands, community marketing manager for OpenJDK community at Sun. While he declined to put a percentage on how much of Java's 6.5 million lines of code are encumbered, Sands said the issue was primarily with Java 2D graphics technology, particularly around font and graphics rasterizing. While open-source alternatives are already available, they don't currently support all the necessary features of the Java 2D API (application programming interface).

For now, Sun will provide plug-ins for the Java 2D technology that can be combined with the rest of Java available under GPLv2 so developers will have access to a complete Java Development Kit (JDK). In the future, Sun plans to work with the open-source community to rewrite the encumbered components to replace the current closed-source code and make it available under GPL2.

Sun first pledged to make Java freely available just over a year ago at JavaOne in May 2006 and then in November announced its somewhat surprising choice of open-source license and began releasing OpenJDK components. In all of the vendor's previous open sourcing of its software, Sun relied on its own CDDL (common development and distribution license). Java was the first time the vendor opted for GPL, a popular license with the free and open-source software community.

Sun's hoping that open sourcing Java under the GPL will lead to Linux distributors embedding the software in their operating systems and thus widening the technology's appeal to more developers. Last month, Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu, said once Java was fully available under GPL, Canonical Ltd., the commercial sponsor of the Linux distribution, would consider including the technology in the core of Ubuntu.

Software implementations based on OpenJDK can now use the Sun Java SE 6 Compatibility Kit to help developers establish compatibility with the current Java SE 6 specification, Sands said. Once such implementations achieve certification, developers will be able to use the "Java Compatible" brand.

Open sourcing Java represents one of the largest donations of code to the developer community, Sands said, but merely making software freely available is insufficient. "Open-source developers need to have rules and governance spelled out for them for how they use and interact with the code base," he added.

With that in mind, Sun is establishing an OpenJDK interim governance board, which is to create a constitution and gain the community's approval for it over the coming year. Sands wouldn't reveal the identities of the five-person board, other than to say only two of them will be Sun employees. A formal naming of the members will take place at JavaOne, he said. Once a constitution is in place, the OpenJDK community will vote to elect a new governance board, again only two of whom will work for Sun, Sands added.

Take my settings with me where ever I go. In Linux, all your personal settings are stored in your Home folder, most in folders that begin with a period (like .gaim). So, I can copy all these settings from one computer to another. I can put these settings on a USB drive. When I switched from Gentoo to Ubuntu, I kept all my settings. On Windows, some settings are under your home folder and some are in the registry. So your settings are not portable.

Samsung Releases New UMPC

Even though the platform itself is struggling to stay afloat, Samsung on Monday introduced a new line of Ultra Mobile PCs in an effort to kick start the market.

The Q1 Ultra is the successor the original Q1, released by the Korean electronics maker last year. It will feature a "split" QWERTY keyboard, mouse, and user-defined function keys.

Intel provides the processor for the Q1 Ultra, that runs at either 600 or 800MHz, and includes 1GB of DDR2 memory. The battery supports about 4.5 hours of continuous use, Samsung claims.

The device also includes a 300-pixel webcam, microphone, 1.3-megapixel digital camera, and a seven- inch LCD screen. In addition, it includes an instant on feature that would make booting into Windows unnecessary for certain applications.

Samsung says the device will be available through retail and "e-tail" outlets including Best Buy, Circuit City, CDW, CompUSA, Amazon.com, NewEgg.com, Buy.com, Costco.com, Tiger Direct, PC Connection, B & H Photo and PC Mall for $799.

"Since the introduction of the Q1, Samsung has been steadfastly committed to the long-term growth and development of this fast-growing product segment," the company's marketing vice president Christopher Franey said.

While both Samsung and Microsoft are putting on a positive front when it comes to UMPC, recent reports indicate that some in the industry are singing a different tune.

One such report came in TG Daily, indicating that Intel is backing away from the platform in favor of smaller "mobile internet devices." Intel has not publicly distanced itself from the UMPC concept as of yet -- and as seen above, it's CPU's are still being used in devices based on the concept.

BlackBerrys Cozy up to Office Phone Systems

RIM announced BlackBerry Mobile Voice System, expanding software that lets cell phones act as office phones.

Research In Motion Ltd. this week tightened up the links between enterprise phone systems and its BlackBerry handsets, demonstrating software that makes it easier for employees and IT administrators to keep the work force connected.

The BlackBerry Mobile Voice System (MVS) expands on software RIM got last year through its acquisition of Ascendent Systems, which lets any cell phone act like an office phone, said David Yoch, senior vice president of software at RIM. The Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite makes cell phones communicate with enterprise PBXs (private branch exchanges), including both traditional and IP (Internet Protocol) systems. This gives employees a single number where they can be reached anywhere, because calls can ring on both the desk phone and the cell phone.

Fixed-mobile convergence in enterprises is intended to free workers from their desks and cut down on the number of missed calls. Some vendors are pursuing it with dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi phones to improve indoor coverage and slash phone bills. The BlackBerry MVS is not designed for such dual-mode phones, but there is a huge potential market for a system designed around RIM's popular business devices. All current BlackBerrys have voice capability.

RIM built on Ascendent's one-size-fits-all product to create software that makes it easier to integrate RIM's own products into enterprise phone systems, Yoch said. The MVS consists of software components for BlackBerry handhelds and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, as well as the Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite. With it, administrators can centrally manage the devices and set policies for them, such as requiring all calls made from a handset to go through the PBX for billing and auditing. It also includes the security features of the Blackberry Enterprise Server so each device can be authenticated and unauthorized handsets can't get into the phone system, Yoch said.

Employees can use all the PBX features they are used to on their desk phones, such as extensions and conference calling, through an interface built in to the familiar BlackBerry client software.

"It just looks, smells and feels like you're using the BlackBerry," Yoch said.

RIM is showing off the MVS at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2007, in Orlando, and will make it available later this month as a free software update for RIM servers and current BlackBerry phones. Making it work with traditional TDM (time-division multiplexing) PBXs requires an Ascendent gateway device. Older RIM handsets can work with Ascendent's system but may not support all the features of the MVS, Yoch said.

Toshiba to Establish Software Center in Vietnam

Toshiba plans to open a development center in Vietnam that will work on embedded software for consumer electronics.

Toshiba Corp. plans to open a development center next month in Vietnam that will work on embedded software for consumer electronics products.

Toshiba Software Development (Vietnam) Co. Ltd. will be based in Hanoi and initially employ around 20 people but is expected to expand to about 300 employees over the next three years, Toshiba said.

At the center low-level software processes will be developed and combined with upper processes from developers in Japan to make up the embedded software that runs in many of the company's digital consumer electronics products and cell phones.

Toshiba said its choice of Vietnam as the location for the new center was partly due to the availability of skilled personnel and lower wages that can be paid in the country. Toshiba already has ties to the country and supports scholarships to Vietnam National University and Hanoi University.

The Tokyo company has software development centers in India and China and the new Vietnamese center is part of its plan to increase software development work over the medium term while not concentrating resources in any one country.

Ubuntu Linux developers plan to extend its open-source software development to handheld Internet-enabled devices.

Developers meeting at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, which runs through the end of this week in Seville, Spain, will discuss details of the new Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project, announced on Saturday.

Ubuntu programmers will develop a mobile version of their Debian-based Linux operating system in collaboration with Intel Corp., which plans a new low-power processor and chipset architecture designed to allow full Internet capability on mobile devices, according to a statement published on the Ubuntu Web site.

The move to offer a mobile and embedded version comes on the heels of a similar project that Intel is supporting: the Gnome Mobile & Embedded Initiative (GMAE), announced April 19 at the Embedded Linux Conference in Santa Clara, California. The initiative is open to developers, manufacturers and others interested in developing mobile device applications based on Gnome-based open-source components.

The summit is being organized by Canonical Ltd., the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu. South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth initiated the project to create Ubuntu, based on Debian GNU/Linux, and founded Canonical in 2004. Canonical offers usage and basic support of the operating system for free, and additional services on commercial terms.

Overall, Ubuntu Linux appears to be gaining traction among users. Last week, Dell Inc. announced plans to preload Ubuntu Linux on its upcoming Linux desktop PCs and laptops. The company said the decision came in response to a customer feedback program that registered high interest in Ubuntu Linux.

Canonical will provide Dell with support services.

The free, open-source operating system runs on notebook and desktop computers as well as thin clients and servers.

Challenges facing developers of the mobile edition include the design of innovative graphic interfaces and power management capabilities, according to the posting on the Ubuntu Web site.

The mobile edition is slated for release in October, together with the new Ubuntu 7.10 version.

Although the use of Linux in smartphones is still comparatively low, accounting for only around 6 percent of the market for smartphone operating systems in 2006, demand for open source will increase as more handset makers move away from older proprietary phone operating systems, Nick Spencer, an analyst with Canalys.com Ltd., said in an earlier interview. Spencer expects demand to be strong in Asia, particularly in China.

HP to Unveil PC with Hybrid High-Def Drive

A spokesperson for Hewlett-Packard confirmed to BetaNews this afternoon that it will be including a hybrid Blu-ray / HD DVD disc reader and Blu-ray disk writer/re-writer drive as one of the options of its new high-performance Pavilion series PCs, with online availability confirmed for Wednesday.

Though HP would not confirm the brand specifically, it will most likely be using an LG "Super Multi Blue" hybrid disc component, which is the only one available that meets the specifications HP gave us this afternoon.Model GBW-H10N reads to Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD, DVD, and CD, and will write to CD, DVD, and Blu-ray but not HD DVD, for reasons that may have more to do with licensing than technology.

The LG option will be available on Pavilion Media Center PC models m8010y and d4890y. Also available will be an optional nVidia GeForce 8800 DirectX 10 graphics card, ATI TV Wonder digital cable tuner card, and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU - currently the only four-core option available on a single die.

The GBW-H10N has been available separately - at least someplace in the world - since June of last year, when a BenQ-branded edition showed up in Taiwan for over $900 retail. Today, the average price of this component is about $550 USD.

While its DVD-ROM write speeds at 16x are typical for drives costing less than $20 via mail order (without the Blu-ray writing capability, of course), its CD-ROM reading speed is a little lower than average: 40x versus the going rate of 52x.

Although HP remains mum on pricing until Wednesday, expect this component to add about $500 USD to the price of a performance Pavilion system.

AOL Falls to Third Largest ISP

In yet another sign of the ubiquity of broadband, AOL said yesterday it now counts only 12 million subscribers - a far cry from the company's peak of 26.7 million in 2002. AOL is now only the third largest ISP, behind both AT&T with 12.1 million subscribers and Comcast with 12.9 million.

AOL has ceased marketing its dial-up and high-speed Internet services, instead focusing on its advertising-based Web business. The company says 8 million users have signed up to the free offerings, although nearly half are former AOL ISP customers. Still, the company remains upbeat about its progress, saying users are now spending more time on AOL Web properties, meaning advertising revenues should increase.

Sun to Help Bring OpenOffice to Mac

"Aside from our compilation efforts, the majority of our work can't be completed until these APIs are in place or at least designed to a point where we can begin figuring out how to marry them to Mac OS X. There is no active coding at this time," said developers.With the aid of Sun, however, the native Mac OS X version of OpenOffice could get back on track. Sun plays a major role in the development of OpenOffice on Windows, which has its roots in Sun's StarOffice suite.
OpenOffice has seen much success on Windows following the release of version 2.0, but its Macintosh brethren has remained stuck in the past without a native port. Engineers at Sun are hoping to change that, lending their support to building an Aqua version of the free Microsoft Office alternative.
While an X11 version of OpenOffice has been available for Mac users, that release required first launching the X Window system - something few consumers even had installed. The OpenOffice development team put the full Aqua port on hold in 2003 with a goal to have it ready during 2006.

At the time, the delay was attributed to API changes happening in the core OpenOffice code base prior to the release of version 2.0. But a major effort to startup the port once again has failed to materialize since.

At first Herbert Dürr and I will contribute to the Mac port, however there certainly will be other Sun developers involved in their areas of expertise when the need arises," said Sun engineer Philipp Lohmann in a blog post.
Lohmann explained that Sun's decision to join the porting project comes due to the increased usage of Apple computers. "If you look around at conferences and airport lounges, you will notice that more and more people are using Apple notebooks these days," he said. "We are supporting this port because of the interest and activity of the community wanting this port. The new invigorated effort in Mac/Aqua-porting (basically since CWS aquavcl01) is an obvious indicator."
For now, the plan is to develop OpenOffice on Mac using the Carbon framework rather than Cocoa.

Here's another desperate move that intends to take Apple by surprise. Creative just released its latest solution to handling the iPod Shuffle issue: the Zen Stone. I'm pretty sure you read all the rumors about the under $50 Creative's Zen Stone imminent launch.

Well, watch out! Creative throws the Zen Stone hoping they'll gun down the one-eyed 80$ 2nd G iPod shuffle (what a creative move). It's their first completely screenless flash player actually. And it's not even selling for a cent short of $50, but somewhere under $40. It's actually priced at 39,99$.

The main ingredients are: an already familiar softly rounded plastic case, USB 2.0, 1 GB storage space and two AA batteries that will run a 20 hours long guitar solo playback (250 songs). Since it's a USB Mass Storage-Class (MSC) device, it allows you to drag and drop files without any software.

You can stuff the Stone with MP3, WMA, WAV files and Audible formats 2 and 3. Stuff music in a screenless Stone, that's a first alright! Will it sink faster than an apple? Maybe.

Apparently, the price list for the accessories explains the 40 bucks chief ingredient. Here it goes: a clip ($9,99), a keychain ($12,99) and an armband ($15,99). You could also choose the TravelSound Zen Stone docking solution for $39,99 (available starting this July). So, the clip costs ¼ the price of the Stone? Nice pricing strategy. Very creative indeed!

The 1 GB Creative Zen Stone flash player will be available starting from the 14th of May in six colors: black, white, red, blue, green and, er, pink.

Yahoo finally launched a web-based version of Yahoo Messenger, allowing the users to communicate with their friends straight from an online page. The product is actually quite amazing, providing an impressive interface bundled with almost perfect functionality. The web-based Yahoo Messenger is probably the most powerful rival for the famous Meebo or other similar services like Ebuddy. As far I can see, the way this new version works is quite impressive, the messages are sent extremely quickly, just like the downloadable application. Yahoo Web Messenger is based on Flash 9 and is compatible with any Yahoo ID or Live Messenger contacts.
Basically, the Yahoo Web Messenger is compatible with most of the popular browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari. 33 Rules to Boost Your Productivity

Heuristics are rules intended to help you solve problems. When a problem is large or complex, and the optimal solution is unclear, applying a heuristic allows you to begin making progress towards a solution even though you can’t visualize the entire path from your starting point.

Suppose your goal is to climb to the peak of a mountain, but there’s no trail to follow. An example of a heuristic would be: Head directly towards the peak until you reach an obstacle you can’t cross. Whenever you reach such an obstacle, follow it around to the right until you’re able to head towards the peak once again. This isn’t the most intelligent or comprehensive heuristic, but in many cases it will work just fine, and you’ll eventually reach the peak.

Heuristics don’t guarantee you’ll find the optimal solution, nor do they generally guarantee a solution at all. But they do a good enough job of solving certain types of problems to be useful. Their strength is that they break the deadlock of indecision and get you into action. As you take action you begin to explore the solution space, which deepens your understanding of the problem. As you gain knowledge about the problem, you can make course corrections along the way, gradually improving your chances of finding a solution. If you try to solve a problem you don’t initially know how to solve, you’ll often figure out a solution as you go, one you never could have imagined until you started moving. This is especially true with creative work such as software development. Often you don’t even know exactly what you’re trying to build until you start building it.

Heuristics have many practical applications, and one of my favorite areas of application is personal productivity. Productivity heuristics are behavioral rules (some general, some situation-specific) that can help us get things done more efficiently. Here are some of my favorites:

Nuke it! The most efficient way to get through a task is to delete it. If it doesn’t need to be done, get it off your to do list.
Daily goals. Without a clear focus, it’s too easy to succumb to distractions. Set targets for each day in advance. Decide what you’ll do; then do it.
Worst first. To defeat procrastination learn to tackle your most unpleasant task first thing in the morning instead of delaying it until later in the day. This small victory will set the tone for a very productive day.
Peak times. Identify your peak cycles of productivity, and schedule your most important tasks for those times. Work on minor tasks during your non-peak times.
No-comm zones. Allocate uninterruptible blocks of time for solo work where you must concentrate. Schedule light, interruptible tasks for your open-comm periods and more challenging projects for your no-comm periods.
Mini-milestones. When you begin a task, identify the target you must reach before you can stop working. For example, when working on a book, you could decide not to get up until you’ve written at least 1000 words. Hit your target no matter what.
Timeboxing. Give yourself a fixed time period, like 30 minutes, to make a dent in a task. Don’t worry about how far you get. Just put in the time. See Timeboxing for more.
Batching. Batch similar tasks like phone calls or errands into a single chunk, and knock them off in a single session.
Early bird. Get up early in the morning, like at 5am, and go straight to work on your most important task. You can often get more done before 8am than most people do in a day.
Cone of silence. Take a laptop with no network or WiFi access, and go to a place where you can work flat out without distractions, such as a library, park, coffee house, or your own backyard. Leave your comm gadgets behind.
Tempo. Deliberately pick up the pace, and try to move a little faster than usual. Speak faster. Walk faster. Type faster. Read faster. Go home sooner.
Relaxify. Reduce stress by cultivating a relaxing, clutter-free workspace. See 10 Ways to Relaxify Your Workspace.
Agendas. Provide clear written agendas to meeting participants in advance. This greatly improves meeting focus and efficiency. You can use it for phone calls too.
Pareto. The Pareto principle is the 80-20 rule, which states that 80% of the value of a task comes from 20% of the effort. Focus your energy on that critical 20%, and don’t overengineer the non-critical 80%.
Ready-fire-aim. Bust procrastination by taking action immediately after setting a goal, even if the action isn’t perfectly planned. You can always adjust course along the way.
Minuteman. Once you have the information you need to make a decision, start a timer and give yourself just 60 seconds to make the actual decision. Take a whole minute to vacillate and second-guess yourself all you want, but come out the other end with a clear choice. Once your decision is made, take some kind of action to set it in motion.
Deadline. Set a deadline for task completion, and use it as a focal point to stay on track.
Promise. Tell others of your commitments, since they’ll help hold you accountable.
Punctuality. Whatever it takes, show up on time. Arrive early.
Gap reading. Use reading to fill in those odd periods like waiting for an appointment, standing in line, or while the coffee is brewing. If you’re a male, you can even read an article while shaving (preferably with an electric razor). That’s 365 articles a year.
Resonance. Visualize your goal as already accomplished. Put yourself into a state of actually being there. Make it real in your mind, and you’ll soon see it in your reality.
Glittering prizes. Give yourself frequent rewards for achievement. See a movie, book a professional massage, or spend a day at an amusement park.
Quad 2. Separate the truly important tasks from the merely urgent. Allocate blocks of time to work on the critical Quadrant 2 tasks, those which are important but rarely urgent, such as physical exercise, writing a book, and finding a relationship partner.
Continuum. At the end of your workday, identify the first task you’ll work on the next day, and set out the materials in advance. The next day begin working on that task immediately.
Slice and dice. Break complex projects into smaller, well-defined tasks. Focus on completing just one of those tasks.
Single-handling. Once you begin a task, stick with it until it’s 100% complete. Don’t switch tasks in the middle. When distractions come up, jot them down to be dealt with later.
Randomize. Pick a totally random piece of a larger project, and complete it. Pay one random bill. Make one phone call. Write page 42 of your book.
Insanely bad. Defeat perfectionism by completing your task in an intentionally terrible fashion, knowing you need never share the results with anyone. Write a blog post about the taste of salt, design a hideously dysfunctional web site, or create a business plan that guarantees a first-year bankruptcy. With a truly horrendous first draft, there’s nowhere to go but up.
30 days. Identify a new habit you’d like to form, and commit to sticking with it for just 30 days. A temporary commitment is much easier to keep than a permanent one. See 30 Days to Success for details.
Delegate. Convince someone else to do it for you.
Cross-pollination. Sign up for martial arts, start a blog, or join an improv group. You’ll often encounter ideas in one field that can boost your performance in another.
Intuition. Go with your gut instinct. It’s probably right.
Optimization. Identify the processes you use most often, and write them down step-by-step. Refactor them on paper for greater efficiency. Then implement and test your improved processes. Sometimes we just can’t see what’s right in front of us until we examine it under a microscope.

Spammers use new spam technique to evade filters

Spammers have stepped up efforts to use encrypted attachments to evade filtering systems, service provider Email Systems has reported.

The technique relies on the fact that many spam systems can’t scan inside emails containing encrypted or password-protected attachment, and work out that they are not legitimate. Without a rule to block such attachments, most systems will pass on the email to recipients, handing spammers an important victory in the battle to get spam through.

In recent weeks, Email Systems detected a small but steady stream of such spam emanating from bot-compromised hosts, containing a zipped-up version of the pervasive ‘Storm’ bot-loading Trojan that plagued Internet users in January.

Recipients would have been able to inadvertently unzip the Trojan using an embedded password, after being attracted by a number of eye-catching subject lines, including ‘Worm Detected!’, ‘Virus Detected!’, ‘Spyware Alert!’ and ‘Warning!’

Although the technique has been around for some months, spammers appear to be stepping up their attempts to use it, said Greg Miller of Email Systems. The company had quarantined hundreds of thousands of copies of attachment spam, up from levels a tenth this volume some months ago.

“We have moved on from spam being just a guy sending out huge amounts of spam,” said Miller. The vast bulk of spam was now automated via bots, and this made finding new infection methods even more critical to the spam economy. “Every six months or so we see a new attack that is very successful,” he said.

As anti-spam systems adapted to popular techniques such as image spam, criminals were having to look further to engineer spam stealthiness.

The easiest means of detecting the current encrypted file attacks would be the attachment’s filesize, 77KB, but this could be varied in future attacks quite easily. The best approach was simply to disallow encrypted emails to pass through the system at all.

Yahoo puts instant-messaging inside Web browsers

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news), the world's second-largest supplier of instant-messaging, has begun offering a new version that works inside a Web browser rather than requiring users to download a separate piece of software.

By dispensing with the need to install and run a separate IM program, Yahoo is looking to reach out to tens of millions of consumers around the world who use the Web in Internet cafes instead of on personal computers at work or at home.

The move also appeals to travelers, business professionals on the go and office workers whose companies block IM software downloads on their internal networks for security reasons.

"Too many people have been restricted from benefiting from this type of communication," Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo's senior vice president in charge of communications, said in an interview.

The introduction of Web-based IM paves the way for Yahoo to eventually allow the rapid-fire text communication service in the member profile pages of social networking services such as MySpace, Facebook or other sites popular with young users.

"We certainly think about the opportunity where social networking and real-time IM communications intersect," Garlinghouse said, giving no timeline for when that may occur.

The Yahoo service is initially available in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Philippines, the United States and Vietnam and will expand to additional countries within the year, Yahoo said.

In India, 46 percent of consumer Web users log on from Internet cafes. Yahoo is the biggest IM service in India, according to comScore data, and it dominates in the Philippines and Vietnam, where upward of 80 percent of IM users use Yahoo.

Web-based IM is nothing new. Meebo.com grew popular among early technology adopters with a Web-based service that allows users to simultaneously sign on to AIM, Yahoo, Microsoft and Google IM programs. Rival Google Talk has been embedded inside Google's e-mail program, Gmail, for more than a year.

But Yahoo brings the advantages of Web-based IM to a far larger market of tens of millions of active users.

"The Internet is evolving from a static experience where a Web page is just a Web page to where Web pages behave more like traditional desktop computer applications," Garlinghouse said.

One attraction of Yahoo's new Web-based IM service is an archive feature that allows a user to search back to find all previous conversations with any of their IM contacts. Another feature likely to impress heavy users is the ability to manage 10 or more simultaneous conversations in just one IM window.

Yahoo is No. 2 worldwide in IM with 88.5 million users, according to audience measurement firm comScore Inc., AOL's AIM is No. 1 in the United States, and Microsoft's MSN/Windows Live Messenger is most popular globally.

Historically, a big disadvantage of IM was that both sender and receiver had to use the same service. Since last July, Yahoo Messenger users have been able to talk to MSN IM users.

IDC analyst Rebecca Swensen said Yahoo, along with AIM, MSN, Google and eBay Inc.'s Skype, is blurring the distinctions that existed in the first decade of the Web between e-mail, instant-messaging and phone-calling.

"All these guys are laying the foundation for an online communications platform for users," she said, noting that Web services are fast becoming available not just on computers but also mobile phones, televisions and game consoles.

Internet Explorer 8 – Such a Disappointment

As planned, Microsoft delivered a general preview of Internet Explorer 8.0 at MIX07 in the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Chris Wilson, Platform Architect for Internet Explorer, presented a session entitled IE7: Past, Present and Future. The Future reference was correlated with Internet Explorer 8, but Wilson failed to present any specific details related to the upcoming version of Microsoft's browser.

Wilson did manage to share a selection of general directions Microsoft is planning to bring to the table with Internet Explorer 8. If IE7 was the indisputable star at MIX06, this year, Silverlight stole the whole show and IE8 was nothing more than a prompt. Wilson even stated openly that Microsoft was not allowing him to go into IE8 details.

Still, the next version of IE will be focused, from its development phase on two aspects, standard compliance and security. As far as customer protection goes, the Redmond Company will aim to repeat the security performances delivered with Internet Explorer 7, but also raise the standard. Since October 2006, when it was released, IE7 has had a good run in terms of security, delivering a major evolution over the feeble IE6 that has permitted Firefox to gain a consistent market share.

According to Mary Jo Foley, IE8 will require developers to “opt-in” to standards mode for websites built for the next version of the browser. This strategy is designed as an inherent part of the effort to make IE8 more standard-compliant. Layout, object model and Ajax development are additional aspects that will be addressed in the development process together with increasing standard compliance.

According to Wilson increased compliance with CSS 2.1 layout standards will be one of the core elements of IE8 development. The Redmond Company also plans to drive up the interoperability of the IE8 object model and to make the browser more tweak- and extension-friendly.

Symantec Slips, but Closes In on AV Product Delivery

Symantec Corp. is slipping on its target delivery time for the next major upgrade of its security product for enterprises, code-named Hamlet, while it irons out final code wrinkles during beta testing.

In May 2006, Symantec CEO John Thompson said Hamlet would be released between January and March of this year. But the product is one of Symantec's biggest releases, incorporating technology from several of Symantec's acquisitions into one piece of code, so more testing is being done.

The company, which holds the highest market share of any security software maker, is deploying Hamlet internally as well as among a limited set of beta customers for testing, said Mathew Lodge, director of product marketing for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, on Wednesday.

"The trials are very important to us, and we feel it's important that we get through those and ensure it is very solid," Lodge said.

Next month, Symantec will announce a public beta schedule, pricing, delivery dates and the product's name, Lodge said.

Symantec has woven in an ability to detect malicious programs based on what the software does on a computer. The technology came from WholeSecurity Inc., which Symantec bought in 2005. Hamlet will still use the signature-based method, which relies on knowing the identity and characteristics of a bad program.

Most security software companies are developing behavior-based detection techniques as the number of malicious software programs has nearly outpaced the ability of vendors' antivirus labs to analyze them and create signatures.

Hamlet also will be able to control what devices can be connected to the network and set policies if those devices lack proper security updates, an area called network access control (NAC). Lodge said Hamlet's NAC will work regardless of what network hardware an enterprise is using.

NAC is considered important because employees are using a growing number of mobile devices that frequently leave and reconnect to the mother network. But the NAC area has moved somewhat slowly because of conflicts over protocols, types of network switches and incompatibility between vendor products, according to Current Analysis Inc.

The NAC technology comes from Sygate Technologies Inc. After the August 2005 acquisition, Symantec rebranded and sold Sygate's NAC product, Lodge said.

Symantec also incorporated rootkit detection capabilities into Hamlet. Rootkits are malicious applications that install themselves in evasive ways to avoid malicious software scanners, Lodge said. That code came from Veritas Software, he said.

Hamlet also includes traditional antivirus product features, such as a firewall, and a single management console for administrators.

Google announced today a new feature for all the AdSense registered members that will allow them to upgrade the account and change their private information. Basically, the AdSense login will be updated to a Google account and you'll be able to use the same information entered for other products designed by the search giant. Until now, the AdSense configuration process was extremely important because it contained private information about the user such as the home address to receive the money, telephone numbers and other sensitive details. However, the Mountain View company wants to increase their powers and let them modify some of the settings using the new function.

“That's right, we've just started our first Google Account migration tests for older AdSense accounts. When you log into your account, you may be greeted by a screen like the one below, asking you to upgrade your login to a "Google Account". If you like the email address you're already using, in most cases you'll be able to upgrade it to a Google Account and keep the same login and password. However, if you use another email address for other Google products like Gmail and Picasaweb, you already have a Google Account and you can finally use the same login for AdSense,” Dobromir Montauk, AdSense Publisher Support, sustained today.

The new function will be displayed in a new screen just after the user logs into his AdSense account. However, if the message doesn't show up, don't be afraid because the company updates the advertising platform slowly, so your turn might come later. You should also remember that Google introduces the function only for the old accounts so, if you're a new AdSense publisher, you might not be included in the update process.

Right now could be a great time to splurge on a laptop, given that many come with Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system to sweeten the deal. But is the new OS reason enough to jump now, or should you hang on to your trusty Windows XP laptop for a while longer?

To find out, we rounded up 15 Vista-equipped laptops from Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, Micro Express, and Toshiba, in two categories: desktop-replacement models powerful enough to serve as your Primary PC, and ultraportables weighing less than 5 pounds. We tested speed and battery life and carefully evaluated screens, keyboards, and other vital features.

We ranked the best five notebooks in each category and awarded Best Buys to the $2301 HP Pavilion dv9000t, a desktop replacement, and the $2150 Dell XPS M1210, an ultraportable. So what can you expect from this first batch of Vista-enabled portables? Though graphically busy and a memory hog, Vista and its Aero 3D environment look great and run well on these suitably powerful laptops; most models in our roundup came with 2GB of memory. If you buy a Vista notebook now, however, you'll encounter more problems with hardware and software compatibility than you would have with an early Windows XP laptop; for example, some docking stations currently disable Aero. But most sources of incompatibility are identical to those you'd run into with a Vista desktop PC, and they should soon fade as vendors update their drivers and software applications.

While a few of the models here are XP-era laptops with an OS transplant, others are among the first notebook PCs to take advantage of some daring new Vista-inspired evolutionary advances. For example, though the Toshiba Portégé R400-S4931 missed out on our chart due to limited performance and a hefty $3499 price tag, it and the $2199 Asus W5fe-2P025E were the only two models to implement Vista SideShow technology. SideShow-equipped laptops come with a small secondary screen in the lid or edge--a little like external displays on clamshell phones--that can display useful information (such as Outlook appointments) even when the notebook is turned off.

The Portégé R400-S4931, the Asus U1F, and the Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 all have vivid new LED-backlit screens that are noticeably brighter and easier to read than a standard fluorescent-backlit panel. The LED-backlit screens are also thinner and use about a third less power, making for lighter laptops with longer battery life. In another first, we formally tested a laptop--the Acer Aspire 9810-6829--with a mammoth 20.1-inch screen.

New Standard Will Make Your Hard Drive Faster

Hard disk drives, as we know them, have a default data block size of 512 bytes, making the smallest sector on the drive 512 bytes in size. All that is about to change because of the initiative of the International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association (IDEMA) which has approved the Long Block Data (LBD) standard on hard drives that increases the size of the default block to 4.096 bytes.

The current 512 byte standard has been around for more than 30 years, and IDEMA put together a committee back in 2000 to work on replacing the standard. There are advantages and disadvantages for this standard, and both rely on the user’s requirements. If you are a user who works with documents, spreadsheets, and basically small-size files, then using the 512 byte standard is just what you need, as you will benefit from the small block size.

When creating a file, which is 700 bytes in size, that file will take 512 bytes from the first block, and the rest from the second block. The remaining space from the second block will be considered full, even if it has only about half the size occupied. If that 700-byte file is written on a 4.096 byte data block, the 700 bytes will take up the required space, and the rest will also be considered full. On the other hand, when writing a large file, say a movie, a hard drive writes faster on 4.096 byte sectors than it would on 512 byte sectors because it has to split the data less often.

For the time being, Seagate and Western Digital have taken into consideration that the standard cannot be brought to the market by storm, it has to be eased onto the consumers. That’s why they will deliver products that use eight continuous 512 byte blocks, so that the drives could use either 512 or 4.096 byte blocks. The performance growth from using this new technology is said to be very big, thus reducing the format and defragment time, and error rates could be reduced ten-fold.

Joel Weiss, president of IDEMA said: "The primary roadblock we had to overcome was legacy software that requires a 512-byte block size. By facilitating the discussion between both hard disk drive manufacturers and the leaders in operating system and BIOS software, we were able to establish a standard that is now accepted by the software industry and can be implemented in a way that is easily updateable and backward compatible.”

This is a slimmed down version of Windows XP. It is really fast because it doesn't have a lot of the crap that usually bogs down Windows like Internet Explorer. I really don't have that great of a description for this because this is not an official M*croso*t product. I tested this and it works really fast. It's not a good idea to install it alongside an official copy of Windows XP. No serial is required for the install and the OS doesn't need to be activated. Have fun with this and let me know how it goes.

User Account Control in Windows Vista is a feature of the operating system that has generated a consistent amount of criticism. As far as I can tell, basic ignorance was the foundation for the

UAC complaints that have diminished following the general availability of the operating system. There is one simple reason for this and the people that are running Vista already know that you can barely notice the UAC prompts. For me, Windows Vista UAC interference in my workflow is close to zero.

Microsoft does provide users with numerous ways to disable or tone down the feature. And there is even a piece of free software that centralizes the UAC functionality options into an easy to use interface. TweakUAC 1.0 Enables users to either enable or disable the UAC and also offer an intermediary solution dubbed Quiet Mode.

“If you’ve used TweakUAC, you’ve seen the “quiet” option it offers that lets you suppress the elevation prompts of UAC without turning the UAC off completely. In such a mode, you keep all the positive effects of UAC, such as Internet Explorer operating in the protected mode, applications starting without the administrative privileges by default, etc. The only thing that gets changed is that you will no longer see the infamous “Windows needs your permission to continue” messages whenever you attempt to make a change to your Vista configuration,” reads an excerpt of the product's description on the TweakUAC official website.

Increase the number of simultaneous downloads in Internet Explorer 7

Internet Explorer 7 will only allow you to download two files at one time. This limitation can prove to be quite an inconvenience for anyone who downloads quite a lot on the Internet. A simply registry tweak can be done to remove this limitation.

1) Click on the Start Pearl and type regedit in the Search Bar.

2) Once you are in the registry editor, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

3) Right click in the empty space, and create a new DWord (32-bit) value. Name it:

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server (The 0 beside Server is a zero)

4) Double click this entry and modify the value to 3.

5) Create another DWord:

MaxConnectionsPerServer

6) Once again, double click this entry and modify the value to 3.

If you have Internet Explorer open, just restart it and you should be able to have an unlimited number of simultaneous downloads running.

Of course, you’re really missing out if you’re not surfing with Firefox.
Really though, sometimes I still surf with IE7 becuase I like how the tabs open next to the current one rather than at the very end.

The $480 Xbox 360 Elite, which comes dressed in matte black with metallic details, has several improvements over its predecessor. It packs a roomy 120GB hard disk (up from 20GB), a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), and a wireless controller. Like the previous version of the Xbox, the Xbox 360 Elite plays regular DVDs, stores music ripped from audio CDs or digital photos, and connects to a PC to enable digital content streaming.

Black Wireless Controller

The Elite's controller is the same as that of the Xbox 360, except that it connects wirelessly with the gaming console and comes in black, to match the Elite console itself. Microsoft rates the controller's wireless range at up to 30 feet. It claims battery life of up to 30 hours on two AA batteries.

HDMI Port

The High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is new to the Xbox. The HDMI 1.2 port allows you to pump high-def video at up to 1080p. You can also bring multichannel surround sound from your Xbox to your TV set or audio-video receiver via a single cable connection.

HDMI Cable

The included HDMI cable connects through the unit's HDMI 1.2 port.

Hard Drive

The Elite expands the Xbox's hard drive capacity from 20GB to 120GB. The hard drive is removable. The big drive gives you more room for gaming content, as well as for all of the content you can purchase and download at the Xbox LIVE marketplace, including high-definition movies, TV episodes, and music.

Audio Adapter

This cable provides composite audio inputs and an optical audio input. The best (and default) digital audio output option is Dolby Digital 5.1.

Gaming Microphone

The Elite includes a standard gaming headset with microphone. At the base of the headset's connector is a microphone on/off switch and a built-in volume dial.

Component HD AV Cable

The Component HD AV cable has component video, S-Video, and composite audio inputs.

Hard Drive Transfer Cable

The hard drive transfer cable is not included in the $480 price. But you'll want one if you plan to transfer your downloaded content from your existing Xbox to your shiny new Elite. A few catches: You can move data from only one 20GB Xbox to one 120GB Xbox; you can move data only once; and some data may not play due to digital-rights-management issues.

Xbox 360 Elite complete set

Like all Xbox 360 systems, the Elite has three powerful core processors. It creates a video image with a 16:9 cinematic aspect ratio and anti-aliasing for smooth textures, and produces full 5.1-channel Dolby Digital surround sound. The Xbox HD DVD Player remains a separate peripheral, though; that's an extra $200.

Hitachi this week announced it has ramped up production on its 1 terabyte hard drive, shipping the unit to retailers across the United States. Pricing for the drive, which spins at 7,200 RPM and features a Serial ATA interface is set at $399 USD.

In order to achieve the record-breaking storage space, Hitachi utilized perpendicular recording, in which bits stand vertical enabling more to be placed on a single platter.
